Raising a dragon in Ice And Fire Mod

How dragon taming works in Ice And Fire Mod: finding eggs, hatching them in the right environment, raising hatchlings and preparing for riding.

Raising your own dragon is the long-term goal for most Ice And Fire Mod players. You do not tame a grown dragon; you raise one from an egg. This guide explains the journey from finding an egg to having a companion large enough to ride, with pointers to the in-game Bestiary for version-specific details.

Finding a dragon egg

Eggs are found where adult dragons live. Dragon lairs are dangerous places guarded by a fully grown dragon, so preparation matters more than speed:

  • Bring strong armour and plenty of healing.
  • Carry protection suited to the dragon's element. Fire resistance helps against fire dragons, for example.
  • Scout from a distance. Sleeping dragons are easier to approach than awake ones.

Hatching: match the egg to its element

Each egg type must be placed in an environment that matches its element before it will hatch. Fire eggs relate to fire, ice eggs to cold and water, and lightning eggs to storms. The exact conditions can differ between versions, so read the dragon pages of your in-game Bestiary before setting up a hatching spot.

Build your hatching area away from anything flammable or valuable. Hatchlings and their element are not gentle with nearby blocks.

Raising a hatchling

A newly hatched dragon bonds with the player nearby. From there it grows through several stages over in-game time, becoming larger and stronger. During this period:

  1. Keep it fed with the foods it accepts; hungry dragons behave unpredictably.
  2. Give it space. Growing dragons quickly outgrow small rooms.
  3. Learn the commanding tools the mod provides for making dragons stay, follow or wander. The Bestiary explains what each tool does in your version.

When can you ride a dragon?

Riding becomes possible once a dragon has grown large enough. Flying on a dragon is one of the mod's most memorable moments, but a grown dragon can also damage terrain. If you play with friends on a server, agree on rules first, and check the configuration notes in our performance settings guide.

Other creatures you can tame

Dragons are not the only companions. Several other creatures in the mod can be tamed or befriended, which makes them useful stepping stones before you are ready for a dragon lair. Our creature overview lists them.
